Reseña histórica de la Copa Africana de Naciones para Dummies: una negra historia (¡PLOP!)

Mañana domingo comienza la Copa Africana de Naciones 2010, (bueno, de pronto) lo que para el común de los mortales será la gran oportunidad no solo de ver fútbol de altísimo nivel sino también de conocer un poco acerca de aquellos países que uno tiene noticias sólo cuando ojea desparchado el Almanaque Mundial. Afortunadamente por éstos lares la transmitirán en TV: éstos días sin fútbol o peor aún, con Torneos de Verano argentinos son más fastidiosos que una canción de Lady Gaga.
La cosa es que aunque muchos sólo le han (hemos) puesto atención de un tiempo para acá, el torneo que empieza el domingo cumple ya 27 ediciones en 53 años (!!). Si, 27 ediciones, la mayoría de ellas jugadas en las épocas en que decir "Fútbol" y "África" en la misma frase era para mencionar chistes originalísimos plagados de simios, caníbales y cocos. Tan huevón que era uno. Eso me han contado (?). Así que para desasnarnos todos, y en exclusiva desde LMDF, vamos a mencionar brevemente los highlights de la mayoría de las ediciones anteriores de la Copa Africana, y si logran aguantarse hasta el final del post les damos de premio una invitación al grupo de Facebook "Ya es Hora que Sergio Galván Rey sea llamado a la Selección Colombia".
I Edición, Sudán 1957. Campeón Egipto.

Resulta que (?) en un Congreso de la FIFA en Lisboa en 1956 se registró por primera vez la participación de países africanos: Egipto, Sudán, Etiopía y Sudáfrica. Los demás no participaron por la sencilla razón que no existían: la mayoría de naciones del continente eran aún colonias británicas (Nigeria o Kenia, por ejemplo), francesas (como Camerún o Togo), belgas (el Congo - antes Zaire), y algunas españolas (Guinea Ecuatorial) y portuguesas (Angola, Mozambique). Así que tal iniciativa sólo podemos verla como el sueño visionario de hombres comprometidos con la unidad africana, o como un desparche de unos tipos con plata y con mucho tiempo libre. No sé, tal vez las dos. El caso es que se decidió la creación de un torneo para el siguiente año que pusiera a competir todos los países africanos hermandados en fútbol. Todos los 4. Bueh, todos los 3, porque Sudáfrica en esa época era gustosa y fiel seguidora del Apartheid como pilar de su política interna, por lo que los demás países de la CAF (los otros 3) decidieron banearla por tiempo indefinido. Lo que hizo que los primeros dos torneos continentales tuvieran a sólo 3 participantes. ¿Alguien dijo Torneo Pirata?

Así que aquel histórico 10 de Febrero de 1957 se jugó por primera vez un partido del torneo africano de naciones, de una entrando a semifinales (sin palabras), en las que Egipto derrotó 2-1 al local Sudán, y Etiopía ganó por el clásico W ante Sudáfrica. La final fué 6 días después, y ahí los egipcios no tuvieron piedad de los etíopes, que no habían encajado goles en todo el torneo (?), empacándoles un lapidario (¿piramidario?) 4-0, todos los tantos convertidos por su estrella Al-Diba.

II Edición, República Árabe Unida (Egipto) 1959. Campeón República Árabe Unida (seee, Egipto)

Para éste torneo se dió la novedad que los locales Egipto habían cambiado su nombre por República Árabe Unida, amén de la unión entre dicho país y Siria y que supuestamente sería el germen de la unidad de todos los países árabes en uno sólo. Germen que murió un par de años después, pues todos sabemos que los árabes son tan unidos como los chilenos sinceros (?). La cosa es que los árabeunidos recibieron a Sudán y Etiopía ésta vez con un triangular en vez de eliminación directa: no se vaya a pensar que era un torneo hechizo...los locales le repitieron la dosis a los etiopes 4-0 y a los sudaneses 2-1 y se alzaron por segunda vez con el trofeo.
III Edición, Etiopía 1962. Campeón Etiopía.
A los que creen que Etiopía no es nadie en el panorama del fútbol mundial les decimos: tienen toda la razón. Pero al menos se pueden preciar, como algunos países sudamericanos con muchas ínfulas pero poca historia (ejem, ejem), de haber ganado un título continental. Fue en la 3ra Edición del torneo, en el que fueron locales y en el que participaron otros 8 países para darle un aire más global a la cosa. En la ronda clasificatoria quedaron fuera Marruecos, Ghana, Zanzíbar (hoy parte de Tanzania), Nigeria y Kenia, quedando como 4 finalistas los locales, Túnez, Egipto (aún llamado República Árabe Unida, pero pura pantomima: Siria había abandonado la unión un año antes y los egipcios siguieron llamándose así hasta 1971) y Uganda. Etiopía derrotó a Túnez 4-2 y Egipto a Uganda 2-1, repitiéndose la final del primer torneo. Pero ésta vez los etíopes dieron la sorpresa y le ganaron a los egipcios 4-2 en tiempo suplementario, para gloria de la nación etíope y del Ras Haile Selassie. Puta, me dieron ganas de fumarme un bareto...

IV Edición, Ghana 1963. Ghana gana el torneo (otro !PLOP!)

Por primera vez un país diferente al de los fundadores de la CAF alberga el torneo. Y en esa edición, dicen las crónicas, se vió más mañas y marrulla que en un partido de fútbol uruguayo. Es que el Estudiantes de Zubeldía y los equipos de Bilardo se quedan chiquitos comparado con el complot que hicieron los locales ghaneses para ganar el torneo: dicen que recibieron a la delegación etíope con sonrisas y abrazos fraternales para después zamparlos en un Hotel de mala muerte, con 4 jugadores en cada habitación y sin aire acondicionado. Además para éstos y los demás participantes los buses programados para llevarlos a entrenar misteriosamente se demoraban y los campos de juego reservados eran negados al momento de su ingreso. Con todas éstas condiciones, una oda al bilardismo o a los tiempos en que el Gordo Cubilla era DT del Olimpia paraguayo, no extraña que los ghaneses queden campeones derrotando en la final 3-0 a Sudán.

V Edición, Túnez 1965. Campeón Ghana.

Ya con 12 países la competencia tomaba más importancia. En ésta edición (así como en la anterior), después de la fase clasificatoria se formaron 2 triangulares, pasando el ganador a la final. Los locales pasaron junto con Ghana, pero la final la ganaron éstos con un 3-2 en tiempo suplementario.
VI Edición, Etiopía 1968. Campeón República Democrática del Congo (después llamado Zaire, después llamado otra vez Congo, a ésta hora en que sale éste post hay altas posibilidades que siga siendo llamado así)
Otra vez los etiopes fueron locales del torneo, que cada edición registraba más participantes. Tanto es así que para ésta edición se definieron 2 grupos de 4 equipos cada uno para definir los semifinalistas, que fueron la RD del Congo, Etiopía, Ghana y Costa de Marfil. El torneo sorpresivamente se lo llevaron los congoleños ganándole en la final a Ghana 1-0, desatando el júbilo en las calles de Kinshasa que se llenaron de aficionados lanzando Maizena y Mandioca.
VII Edición, Sudán 1970. Campeón Sudán.
Lo bueno de éste tipo de torneos es que son vehículos para ganar alguna discusión perdida: algún aficionado sudanés peleando con otro ugandés le podrá espetar tranquilamente un "Que va ome pirobo, ganá primero la Copa Africana y después hablamos, andá a quemar alguna aldea más bien, amargo". Es que Sudán por primera y única vez en su historia quedó campeón del certamen, y nos atrevemos a decir que de cualquier cosa conocida. Los locales quedaron segundos en su grupo, pero le ganaron en la semifinal a la República Árabe Unida (seee, Egipto) por 2-1 y les tocó ir a la final contra los favoritos ghaneses, que habían apeado (?) a Costa de Marfil por el mismo marcador. La final fué tensa, y en medio de un calor del hijueputa (en ninguna parte lo leímos, pero lo suponemos (?)) Sudán se alzó con el hito más grande de su historia futbolística al derrotar a Ghana por 1-0.

VIII Edición, Camerún 1972. Campeón Congo (no confundir con el otro Congo, después llamado Zaire, etc, etc)

En los tiempos en que Camerún no exisssstía papá, les tocó ser locales de la Octava edición del torneo, que vió como sorprendentemente Congo y Malí llegaron a la final. Ojo: éste Congo no es el mismo que el Congo que ganó en la sexta edición: ésta es la República del Congo (también llamado Congo-Brazzaville por su capital, para diferenciarlos del otro), que sin que nadie se lo esperara ganó el único título de su historia al vencer en la final a Mali por 3-2.
IX Edición, Egipto 1974. Campeón Zaire
(hoy República Democrática del Congo...¡hombre, que no, no es el mismo Congo que ganó la edición anterior!)

Ese fue el mismo año en el que Zaire protagonizó una de las gestas más pintorescas de las Copas del Mundo (leer por aquí), y de acuerdo con el título continental que ganaron el mismo año se puede decir que eran la potencia africana del momento. O sea, muy jodidos estaban por allá de nivel... La selección de Zaire paseó su sublime uniforme por ese torneo, ganándolo al derrotar 2-0 en la final a Zambia y dándose el lujo de dejar en el camino a los locales egipcios al vencerlos por 3-2 en El Cairo.

X Edición, Etiopía 1976. Campeón Marruecos.

El ambiente para la edición de ese año se vió enrarecida por problemas políticos y logísticos derivados del golpe de un Estado en Etiopía el año anterior (que derrocó al Negus Haile Selassie) y las protestas de los egipcios sin códigos pidiendo cambio de sede a su país. Todo se resolvió y el torneo fué un exitazo que definió por primera y única vez hasta ahora a Marruecos como campeón, al ganar el cuadrangular final en Addis Abeba. Guinea figuró por una vez en el mapa futbolístico al ser segundo y los etíopes quedaron eliminados en primera ronda, demostrando que el nivel del futbol continental subía de a poco y que en lo único en lo que estaban vigentes era en las canciones de Bob Marley.

XIII Edición, Libia 1982. Campeón Ghana.


Por primera vez el país de éste señor es sede del torneo continental. Como en las últimas ediciones se sembraron 8 clasificados en dos grupos de 4 cada uno, pero a diferencia de las 3 anteriores se volvió al sistema de semifinal y final. Los locales, practicamente inexistentes a nivel futbolístico antes y después, se aprovecharon de su localía y ganaron su grupo, pasando a las semis con Ghana, la tremenda Argelia de (de pie) Ladkhar Belloumi y Rabah Madjer (sentarse) que después fué sorpresa en el Mundial de España de ese año, y Zambia. A la final pasaron los libios y los ghaneses, que finalmente quedaron campeones ganándole a los locales la final por penales 7-6 (1-1 en tiempo reglamentario).

XIV Edición, Costa de Marfil 1984. Campeón Camerún.
Por primera vez Camerún gana un título continental. Y tenía cómo: formó un combo bastante temible que 2 años antes puso a parir a Italia, Polonia y Perú en el Mundial, y que sería la base del equipo que sorprendería más aún 6 años después en Italia. Por mencionar al portero Thomas N`Kono (¡en la foto de abajo saben cual es!), leyenda del fútbol camerunés y uno de los historicos de todos los tiempos del Espanyol de Barcelona; al mutifacético volante Jean Pierre Tokoto (el negro en la foto de abajo (?)), a Teophile Abega, y a un tal Roger Milla. Los Leones Indomables (¿de dónde sacaron ese apodo tan cacorro?) vencieron en una durísima semifinal a Argelia por penales y se quedaron con el trofeo al derrotar a Nigeria 3-1 en la final.

XV Edición, Egipto 1986. Campeón Egipto.
XVI Edición, Marruecos 1988. Campeón Camerún.


Confirmando su supremacía en la década, los Leones Indomables (seee, pero cómo les digo entonces?) ganan su segundo campeonato continental derrotando otra vez a Nigeria en el partido decisivo en Casablanca. Ya para éstas alturas hay que anotar que el torneo había alcanzado un nivel bastante bueno, en el que muchas de sus figuras eran habituales miembros de clubes franceses, belgas, portugueses y en menor medida españoles. Sin embargo fuera de África nadie les paraba bolas, y no fué hasta el Mundial de dos años después que el mundo conoció el potencial del fútbol africano y Pelé comenzó con la frase "Un país africano ganará el próximo mundial" que lleva repitiendo 5 mundiales seguidos.

XVII Edición, Argelia 1990. Campeón Argelia.
XVIII Edición, Senegal 1992. Campeón Costa de Marfil.
XIX Edición, Túnez 1994. Campeón Nigeria.
XX Edición, Sudáfrica 1996. Campeón Sudáfrica.


Por primera vez Sudáfrica pudo jugar el torneo continental al serle levantado (por el fin del apartheid) el baneo vigente desde la primera edición. Para celebrar tal acontecimiento con bombos y platillos fueron seleccionados como sede del 20avo torneo, que por primera vez se jugó con un formato de 16 equipos en 4 equipos. El torneo lo ganaron los locales sin despeinarse, mérito grande para un país casi sin fogueo internacional y con un fútbol más plano que una guatemalteca tomando el sol en la playa. Lo que sí evidenció la competición es la abierta división en el deporte sudafricano: la mayoría de los negros prefiere el fútbol, la mayoría de los blancos el rugby y/o el cricket, y la mayoría de los que no somos de allá preferimos a Charlize Theron.

La vigésimotercera edición de éste torneo vió en competencia una de las camisetas más grossas de todos los tiempos (para otros una de las más perratas): el modelo Puma sin mangas para Camerún. No sé si influyó en algo, pero ese equipo jugaba como una maquinita coronada por su figura, el en ese entonces poco conocido y aún poco llorón delantero del Mallorca Samuel Eto´o. Los camerunenses sólo cedieron un punto en todo el torneo: el empate en la final 0-0 ante Senegal, que después ganaron por penales.

...y última hasta ahora, que vió a Egipto consolidarse como los reyes históricos de la Copa de Naciones Africana con 6 títulos. Y tambien como los eternos cagones de las eliminatorias: a pesar de su éxito sólo se han clasificado a 2 Mundiales (!!!!) en 1934 y 1990. Pero esa es otra historia que se tratará oportunamente algún día. Si tengo tiempo. De pronto. No sé.

Estas figuras auguraban negros destinos para Etoo antes de la semifinal contra Ghana. El cajoncito se lo tuvo que hacer caber, porque perdieron los locales 1-0

    Ahora, respecto de la trivias:

    En la foto del camerún del 84.. ¿cómo no reconocer a ese personaje?... NEGRO HIJUEPUTA!!!! que se nos volvió una pesadilla a los éramos unos inocentes niños por allá en 1990, que sufríamos en el alma por nuestra tricolor.

    Con la otra trivia, pueeeehh; Nelson Mandela debe ser el que tiene puesta una camiseta de un equipo de futbol (?)

  4. Como siempre maestro, sus entradas derrochan grossismo de alto nivel, la pelea entre el Sudanes y el Ugandes merece chibchapedia y pues esta reseña merece enmarcarse por lo completa.

    Por cierto, yo tambn prefiero a (ponerse de pie y mirar como gueva y/o depravado) Charlize Theron (sentarse)

  5. Excelente recuento de la historia del magno evento del continente negro. Les doy algunos datos del torneo de éste año; se realizará en Angola (como ya saben) en 4 sedes en Luanda la capital con un estadio de 40.000 espectadores y en Benguela, Cabinda y Lubango con 20.000 espectadores cada uno; según la página oficial del evento, "ingenieros" de Sincelejo y Córdoba expertos en la construcción de escenarios para corralejas, asesoraron a las autoridades locales para la construcción de los estadios. Para las ediciones de 2012 y 2014 están como sedes Gabon/Guinea Ecuatorial y Libia respectivamente, siendo Nigeria país de reserva por si las sedes elegidas: a) desaparecen, b)hay un golpe de estado, c) alguien los invade o los bombardea o d) simplemente no tienen plata para organizar el evento.

    De otro lado el inicio de la copa africana se me parece al de la copa america, cuando Argentina y Uruguay jugaban un partido mal año, y el ganador se coronaba "campeón de la copa américa"

  6. Excelente post, maestro. Ese Roger Milla creo que tiene el record del jugador mas viejo en un mundial (por ahi a los 43 años cuando jugo en USA 1994). Y yo tambien prefiero a esa deliciosa Charlize para hacerle el 71 (como el 69 con 2 dedos en el culo)
